Creative Writing – Softball

Creative Writing – Softball
“Heads up!” Wes yelled at Roger, Eric, and Henry. The three were distracted discussing their favorite topic Chicas. They didn’t notice they walked right into the middle of a softball game. An improv game started up in one of the clear fields wasn’t an unusual thing at church camp. This would be the third summer the teens attended. Although the pretense of the camp was to learn about god, the adolescent search for coupling was priority number one. “It’s a fly ball, watch out!” Roger and his friends ran in different directions to avoid being hit by the softball.

Running in a chaotic manner, Roger zigged and zagged to his right, then to the left. Like a master assassin skillfully dodging ninja throwing stars. Well in his mind’s eye that’s what he looked like. Out of breath he stopped and sees his friends and the game players staring wide-eyed in his direction. THUMP! Roger feels something hit his head. A few moments later, which feels like hours he finds himself looking up at the sky. Faces staring down, head throbbing from the sharp pain. He hears robust laughter of Wes. “Dude! That was crazy, you totally ran right to the ball!” Gesturing with both hands Wes reenacts the scene. With his left, he moves it in chaotic every which way directions. With his right, he shows a slow upward then downward slope of the ball. He has them meet fingertip to fingertip in front of Roger’s eyes. Rogers first thought “I’m not going to impress the Chicas this way, then again maybe I did get someone’s attention.”

The Weekly Comic Art Challenge 2012 – Week One “Shazam”

Last week I started the “Weekly Comic Art Challenge”. I put out a challenge to all my art friends out on the internet! Once a week I’ll name a theme, and all artists that want to participate can draw, ink, and/or color a piece about that theme. This week’s theme was “Shazam”. Here are the entries I received this week. With the artist’s name, the Title of the piece, and a link to their website.

Happy Halloween 2011 – Attack of the Cybermen

YOU WILL BE DELETED

This year we were invited to a few Halloween parties. So I decided to make my own costume from scratch. I had been toying with the idea of being a character from Doctor Who for a few months. Originally I thought of a Dalek, but I knew I really wanted to be a Cybermen.

Looking online for ideas, I was inspired by all the great costumes people had already made. I knew I could do it. Here’s my end result. Some cardboard, duck tap, spray paint, and a lot of imagination. This is my Cyberman Costume. I even won a costume contest! – HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

The 30 Characters Challenge 2011 is Here

The 30 Characters Challenge 2011 is Here!

November is coming and that means it’s time for the 30 characters challenge again! What’s the 30 Characters Challenge you ask? in November 2009 comic creator Tyler James put out a challenge to create 30 new characters in 30 days. He invited anyone that wanted to join to participate on a blog site he created (30characters.wordpress.com). I was among those that participated and had a blast. I  then took the challenge again last year at the awesome new site (www.30characters.com).

A year has come and it’s time for the 30 Characters challenge again. This time it looks like there will be over 300 participants. WOW! As an alumnus of all the challenges, I’m ready to jump in again. I’m getting ready to bring my A-Game this time! I have a better idea of how to approach the challenge. Last time around I submitted pencil character designs (3 were inked). I’m planning on inking and digitally coloring all of them this time. (It will be a test of my time management skills). I’ve seen my style change in the last few years. Leaning more toward inking, so I’m excited to focus on finished colored designs this year.

All are invited to Join the Challenge, the registration deadline is Sunday, October 30th. And the characters will start going up on November 1st. Make sure to check it out!

Here’s a site Banner I created with one of my original characters from last year’s challenge!

Black Adam Inking

Black Adam Inking

I’ve been listing to the DC 52, a Graphic Audio Book for the past few weeks (when I’m on the bus or during my lunch). One of the main characters is Black Adam. I’ve really enjoyed the adventures with the Black Marvel Family. So I was inspired to pencil and ink this drawing of Black Adam.

For the pencils, I used a .05 HB mechanical pencil. (which can be seen in a previous blog post: Black Adam Pencils ). For this inking, I used a 102 nib pen and a #3 sable brush with black India ink. My standard inking tools. I have fun with this one. In the next few days, I plan on coloring it next. SHAZAM!

Inking of Skull One Veritech Fighter from Robotech

Inking of Skull – One Veritech Fighter from Robotech

A few weeks ago I watched a Robotech marathon and was inspired to draw my own Veritech Fighter. So I drew the Skull Leader! Originally Roy Fokker then Rick Hunter fighter in the Macross Saga. I finally got to inking it this weekend. Using only my 102 nib pen, I really like the way it came out. For this inking, I used thicker lines than I usually do. It gives it a nice solid feeling. Plan on digitally coloring it in the next few days too. so keep an eye out!

Pencils of Skull One Veritech Fighter from Robotech

Pencils of Skull – One Veritech Fighter from Robotech

A few weeks ago I went to a comic convention where there was a panel on Robotech. I was a huge fan of the cartoon back when it originally aired in 1985. The panel brought back great memories of why I enjoyed the show. I then discovered Netflix had the whole series for instant watch. So I had a Robotech marathon! Watching the show I was inspired to pencil the Skull-One Veritech Fighter, originally piloted by Roy Fokker and then by Rick Hunter. My plan is to ink this piece and then digitally color it. So keep an eye out.

Quick Spider-Man Sketch and Inking

Spider-Man ink drawing

Quick Spider-Man Sketch and Inking

Here’s a quick Spider-Man sketch and inking I did. The pencils took me about 10 minutes to draw and the inking even less time. This was a personal exercise to test out my newest inking tool. A Pentel Medium Tip Brush Pen.

I saw the brush pen at my local Hobby Lobby and thought…”What’s this?”. So I had to buy it and test it out. When I ink my work I usually like to use a nib pen, I’m not very proficient in using a brush. This new discovery bridges the gap I have between the nib and brush. Its nylon brush tip inks like a standard brush but gave me the control I like with the nib pen. I really enjoyed the look my inking has too. I was able to get some nice thick lines. The inking looks and feels looser than my usual inks. I’m excited to see how I can incorporate this into my evolving inking style.
